Youth triumph in local derby

With school fixtures taking place the previous day, several players had to drop out or played carrying slight injuries as Llanishen Youth visited local rivals Rhiwbina. The spirit in the squad was shown when Alex Osbourne who usually plays second row, volunteered to play full back and did an excellent job. Llanishen suffered another blow early in the game when hard working prop Liam Williams had to leave the field with a head injury. Despite this the visitors took the lead when centre Josh Kemble ripped the ball off his opposite number and offloaded the ball to Matt Dyke to get the first try of the game, Euan Phillips converting. The next period belonged to Rhiwbina who levelled the scores following a driving maul, and should have taken the lead but spilled the ball crossing the line. Llanishen got back into the game and retook the lead when skipper Zac Afzal charged down a kick and gathered the ball for a try, Phillips hit the post with the conversion attempt. After a good lineout take from Tom Fitzpatrick the ball was moved quikly along the line for Kemble to get a well deserved try and the bonus try was secured before half time when Joe Jackson fielded a goal line drop out, made ground and fed the supporting Luke Cousins to cross for the visitors fourth try. The lead was extended early in the second half when a strong run from Dyke took him past several defenders to get his second and Llanishen's fifth try. Rhiwbina then got their second but Llanishen responded straight away when Cousins made a break and after a couple of offloads Nick Russell-Maxwell crossed, Phillips adding the extras and then scored a brilliant solo try which he also converted. The home side got the final score cross when their outside half gathered his own chip kick to cross for a try. Final score Rhiwbina Youth 19 Llanishen Youth 43. All the players contributed to the win and can be proud of their efforts.
