What a weekend of rugby! St Peters and Llanishen never fails to excite and our team really turned up today. Right from the off our defensive line was awesome, the big red wall we've been looking for and the number of 6 tackle turnovers we got as a result was the most pleasing element of the game. To give credit, it was a good morning of entertaining rugby from both clubs, despite the clear ill-effects of the previous late night and the Wales international.
Defence was much-improved with good tracking of opposition players and willingness to tackle from all the boys. Ben, was as usual, leading by example (described by one St Peter's onlooker as a 'beast') but there was solid tackling from Brodie and Thomas Burgess Hunt, whose enthusiasm won him a consecutive MoS award. Sideways running was noticeably lacking this week, with some smart off-loads and runs into gaps that have been missing of late. Tom Holroyd found his running confidence again, and some great lines from Oliver contributed to some hallmark individual tries but even better some cracking draw-and-gives to open up space on the wings. Everyone played their part in creating some lovely tries passing the ball thought the hands - yes you read that correctly! Good progress all round and excellent to see the boys adopting some of the skills driven home at training.
Ellis is consistently excellent in defence and Evan Johnson always makes good yards going forward. Henry joined us for the 1st time in a game today and what an impact he had. Great skill passing the ball out of the tackle and showed some real gas to burn in for a lovely try at the end. Well worth the man of the match award. Welcome to Llanishen! Rhys too was doing some really strong running and following Henry's lead with a few cheeky "out the back door passes" and a couple of lovely tries. But it was his tackling today that saw him get man of steel. Harry and Charlie were both as good as usual and got up after a couple of hard knocks to scores some nice tries.
