Under 15s Jump Jack & Jive

It was game on at Llanishen’s 3G and as usual the wind and rain were in attendance. Llanishen had first use of the wind and were soon on the attack.

The Llanishen pack were giving the backs front foot ball and their scrum half, Finn, was always looking to snipe in and around the rucks and mauls and give a fine service to the outside half.

Newbridge had powerful runners but after tackles were made the hungry pack was looking to jackal and set the backs in motion.

A great break by centre, Harrison, after a wonderful dummy pass, looked as though it would bring the first try. A last gasp tackle brought him down just short of the line but a delightful overhead pass and slick take and give Joe J the chance to step out and score a converted try

The Lions front row was an inexperienced one but Spencer, Zac and Woody were up to the task with the power coming from the row, JJ and Tom. The front five were also in evidence in open play, complementing the sterling work done by the back row, Tom, Matt and Joe B.

An awarded penalty was kicked to the corner and from the subsequent catch a maul was set up. The drive was held up but moments later a good pass from Euan and a super angle by Louis allowed him to punch through a gap and score under the posts.

Just before half time an attacking scum gave Llanishen the chance to move the ball across the back line for Josh to score in the corner. The crisp passing and running before drawing a defender was a pleasure to watch.

The second half was going to be a challenge with the team how playing into the wind but they made light of the conditions with great basic skills. Catching the ball was difficult but Owen, Llanishen full back, and the other backs thrived on the steady supply of ball from the pack and from clearing kicks by the opposition.

An impressive feature of the half was the powerful kicking displayed by Harrison, often taking pressure off the team. In addition the willingness of the backs to engage in the rucks and mauls was impressive.

Newbridge offered more in attack during the half but Llanishen always seemed in control and looked dangerous when attacking. This attacking mentality continued with the introduction of Ben and Alex off the bench as they linked up play and contributed well to the defensive effort.

An attack seemed certain to bring a try but a superb try-saving tackle by Ellis, a Newbridge back, kept the Lions out.

The line was, however, soon broken as forwards and backs combined to give Josh K the chance to score his second try.

From the kick off Matt caught the ball and set off on a mazy powerful run up field. This attacking mentality was apparent all game and if you want to cheer yourself up this season take the opportunity to watch the Young Lions play. You won’t be disappointed!
