Llanishen RFC v Bern Bears

Bern Baby Burn (Rugby Inferno)

After a delayed flight the Swiss team arrived with only 50 pence left in the light meter so 22 minutes a half it became.

Credit to the Bern Bears because, after only five minutes, they were ready for kick-off. Now that’s my kind of warm up!

The kick off was taken by Bern and, from the off, they went on the attack. This Swiss team certain

ly weren’t going to roll over and have their ursine belly tickled.

The Bern outside half, sporting a marvellous RAF squadron leader moustache, was running good lines and setting his backs free.

The Lions responded well with the vintage outside half, Simon Lloyd, kicking well (no surprise there) to gain good field position,

Play seemed to be stuck around the half-way line for a few minutes when, like an arrow from William Tell’s bow, Jack Marshall hit a gap and accelerated past defenders to score the first senior try on the new pitch.

Time for comedy as Carl missed a high ball, it is difficult to catch a ball with boxing gloves on, and ran around the ball. This allowed the hard chasing Bern player to score a try and the conversion took the away side into the lead.

Soon after the restart the Bern fullback cleared the ball into midfield where, the be-gloved one fumbled the ball backwards, drawing defenders into a false sense of security. A pass to Chappers gave him enough room to accelerate around the opposing winger and run in from forty metres. The Lions back into the lead.

Almost straight away the Lions were back on the attack and what can you fondue when faced with pace. Nathan setting off from just inside his own half, broke the defensive line and went under the posts on the stroke of half time.

With the meter running down quickly a 30 second turn around and the second half began.

A powerful Bern scrum drove Llanishen off the ball, causing the Lions to concede a penalty. A quick tap and acceleration allowed the Bern 10 to beat a number defenders and score under the posts.

Time for the Lions to raise the game and after a number of phases Sam Darcey duly delivered. A very powerful run, breaking a number of tackles, took Llanishen eight points clear.

Llanishen kept the pressure on and Carl, having moved to scrum half, picked up the ball and side-stepped and jinked his way under the posts.

Time was then called and there was just time to get a photo of both teams.

It was a real pleasure chatting to the Bern replacements, great humour and an obvious love of the game.

I’m sure they enjoyed their time back at the club and trust they have a great time watching the Wales versus South Africa game tomorrow.

Hopefully we get to play against each other again soon.
